Ring Making Class in Uluwatu: A Complete Guide

· Updated · 5 min read

Shaping a silver ring on the steel mandrel with a wooden mallet

A ring making class in Uluwatu is a one-to-two-hour session where you design, forge and polish your own ring from pure silver or solid brass, guided one-to-one by a Balinese silversmith, and wear it home the same day. At Bali Jewelry House in Ungasan the Silver Class costs Rp 650.000 per person with one to six grams of pure silver included, and no experience is needed.

This guide walks through what happens at the bench, which class suits you, and how to fit it into an Uluwatu day.

Why Make a Ring in Uluwatu?

Uluwatu is known for its cliffs, its surf breaks and the temple above the ocean. Most days here are spent outdoors, and a class at the bench is a good counterweight: an hour or two of slow, focused work in the shade, with something to show for it at the end.

Silversmithing is also one of the island's oldest crafts. Balinese silver has been worked for temple ornament, ceremony and family trade for centuries, and the techniques you use in class (melting, rolling, sawing, soldering, polishing) are the same foundations every silversmith learns first. If you want the background, read our short history of Balinese silver.

What Happens at the Bench

Every class follows the same four steps. Your silversmith sits beside you the whole time and handles anything you are not ready for yet, including the flame.

1. Begin on Paper

You start by deciding what to make. Sketch your own idea, bring a photo of something you like, or choose from the house patterns. Your silversmith checks the design against the amount of metal and measures your finger, so the band is forged to your size (or to someone else's, if it is a gift).

2. Fire and Grain

In the silver classes, pure silver grain is melted in a small crucible over charcoal under the torch, poured, cooled and rolled through the mill into a strip or wire you can work. It is the moment most guests film.

3. The Silversmith's Hand

Now the ring takes shape. You saw the strip to length, bend it around the steel mandrel with a mallet, and solder the join. This is where you can add character: a hammered texture, stamped letters or a date, or a twist in the wire.

4. Finish to a Mirror

Files, sandpaper and the polishing wheel take the piece from dull metal to a bright finish. Then it goes on your finger, and you wear it home.

Which Class to Choose

Bali Jewelry House runs five classes every day from 9 AM to 5 PM, plus a night class until 10 PM. All of them include every tool of the bench, a silversmith beside you and a welcome drink.

  • Silver Class: Rp 650.000 per person, 1–6 g of pure silver, one to two hours. The classic choice for a ring, a pendant or a pair of small earrings.
  • Couple Silver Class: Rp 1.250.000 per couple. Two benches side by side, matching rings, and a word engraved inside each band.
  • Brass Jewelry Workshop: Rp 500.000 per person, up to 7 g of solid brass, and gold plating included before you leave. The class we recommend for first-timers and children.
  • Family Silver Class: Rp 2.600.000 for two adults and two children, with a private silversmith and safe tools for the kids.
  • Group Silver Class: from five guests, priced on request for birthdays, teams and wedding parties.

If you would like to eat or celebrate as well, the class packages combine the Silver Class with The House Café: Royal Refreshment adds any drink from the menu (Rp 720.000 per person) and the Ultimate Package adds any dish and any drink (Rp 800.000 per person).

What Can You Make?

A ring is the favorite and fits comfortably in the silver included. Pendants, earrings and simple bracelets leave the bench every day too. If your design grows, extra silver is Rp 85.000 per gram. You can also set a stone: the studio keeps a tray of gemstones from Rp 200.000, described on our gemstones page. In the silver classes, gold plating is an add-on at Rp 250.000.

Practical Tips

  • Book on WhatsApp. Send your date, class and party size and we answer the same day. A day ahead is usually enough; in high season, two or three. Walk-ins are welcome whenever a bench is free.
  • Bring an idea. A photo or a rough sketch saves time at the start, but the house patterns are there if you have nothing in mind.
  • Know your size, or let us measure. If the ring is a gift, our ring size finder helps you work out the size before you come.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and tie back long hair. You will be working with small tools and, with your silversmith, a flame.
  • Leave room in your day. Simple designs finish faster, detailed pieces take longer. Plan on up to two hours and you will not feel rushed.
